November is Diabetes Awareness Month. As an eye care professional, we wanted to let you know what you can do to keep your eyes as healthy as possible when living with diabetes.
Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of blindness and often has no early warning signs. If you have diabetes, we recommend at least a yearly dilated comprehensive eye exams. Early detection, timely treatment and appropriate follow-up care are the only ways to prevent vision loss. Although there are treatments for diabetic eye disease, our goal at Beachwood Family Eye Care is to educate our patients on best practices when it comes to lifestyle and health care and to do our best to prevent diabetic eye disease in the first place. Here is a way to keep your health on TRACK.
* Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.
* Reach and maintain a healthy weight.
* Add more physical activity to your daily routine.
* Control your ABC’s—A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
* Kick the smoking habit.
